Boom Town evokes the energetic, fast-paced life of a frontier town during the American West. The piece is inspired by the sounds of construction and dynamite blasts as well as the “boom” of pre-concert adjustments made by musicians. The performance incorporates a unique element where musicians lift their chairs and drop them in time with the rhythm, creating an explosive effect. While this should be done safely, it adds to the visual and auditory excitement. The piece alternates between intense, rhythmic passages and quieter, more lyrical moments, with careful attention given to dynamics and articulation. It also offers an opportunity for audience participation during the “Boom! Boom!” shouts.
